IRELAND’S LIZZIE HOLDEN RETIRES FROM INTERNATIO­NAL HOCKEY

TENNIS: Cameron Norrie capped a remarkable few weeks for British tennis with victory in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, on Sunday night. The 26-year-old came from a set down to defeat Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvi­li 3-6 6-4 6-1, netting himself one of the biggest titles on the ATP Tour and around €1million in prize money.

HOCKEY: Ireland’s Lizzie Holden has confirmed her retirement from internatio­nal hockey following a historymak­ing 13-year career that brought World Cup silver, an Olympic appearance and 206 caps. The 31-year-old steps away having made her debut as a teenager at June 2008’s Celtic Cup, finishing off in Tokyo this summer. The effervesce­nt midfielder has run the gamut of emotions from qualifier heartbreak­ers to those glorious 2018 summer days in London and everything in between, seemingly always bringing out the widest of smiles. ‘I always felt the Olympics was going to be my last dance,’ she said of her decision to step back. ‘I had gone back and forth in my head for a long time but I think it is the right time for me to step away.’ ‘I’ve been very lucky to travel around the world and share such unique experience­s with a great group of people,’ she added.

GYMNASTICS: Olympic finalist Rhys McClenagha­n and European finalist Emma Slevin are in Kitakyushu, Japan, to compete in the 2021 Artistic Gymnastics World Championsh­ips. Slevin was in action in the early hours of this morning in the All Around qualifiers, while McClenagha­n competes in the Pommel Horse qualifiers tomorrow at 7.10am Irish time.
