Playing tragic Marilyn made me cry, admits Ana
SHE went from all-action Bond Girl to tragic Blonde Girl.
Now Cuban actress Ana de Armas has admitted playing Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe in new film Blonde left her in tears at the end of the day.
Ms de Armas, 34, said the ‘weight’ of playing the tragic star, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 36 in 1962, stayed with her as ‘there was no way to unplug’.
She explained: ‘I was thinking of her so much, some days I would go home and have

dinner and, as I was washing the dishes I would just start sobbing, crying and crying, because I had this terrible feeling – I knew I couldn’t fix it.’
She said the Some Like It Hot actress Miss Monroe went through ‘dark’ experiences in her life but that made her love her more. Ms de Armas, who starred in 007 hit No Time To Die, this month received a 14minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival for her performance as Marilyn.
The star, who did not learn to speak English until she was in her 20s, admitted that she felt a ‘lot of fear and insecurity’ over her accent and worried about what her castmates would think.
She said: ‘I felt in a very vulnerable position. Not just in specific difficult scenes – the whole process was overwhelming for me. Most of the time I thought I was doing it wrong. I was thinking, “What are these American actors thinking of me? What are they thinking about my accent?”’ But the Knives Out actress, who posed for a new photoshoot for AnOther Magazine, told it that Blonde director Andrew Dominik helped her through her insecurity. She said: ‘Andrew could sense that discomfort and right away he told me, “That’s how she [Monroe] felt. Embrace it”.’ Blonde is released on Netflix next Wednesday.
