QUESTION

I am a heartbroken mother of a 28-year-old son, who is abusing alcohol. He is neglecting his financial commitments and his own wellbeing. I try not to enable him by refusing to pick up the pieces of his life, but I feel so guilty and helpless. Nothing I say seems to get through to him, all he thinks about his where his next drink is coming from. I fight with him constantly and beg him to get help, even refusing to see him. But nothing seems to work. What can I do?

ANSWER

Unfortunately you could spend the rest of your life trying to make your son be, do, or feel something he isn’t and doesn’t want to do. Willpower is not the key to be sought in this instance, surrender is. Surrendering to powerlessness will help you gain the presence of mind to stop wasting time and energy trying to change and control that which you cannot. Seeking help from professionals who can help you understand and deal with this situation will give you a better perspective on how to deal with the matter, and prevent you from enabling.
