Adamstown’s initial plans for shopping and transport only getting back on track
BUILDING of Adamstown started in 2005 and it was the first new planned town since Shannon, Co. Clare, in the 1960s.
Located 16 kilometres from Dublin, near Lucan, it takes roughly 16 minutes to reach by train.
Adamstown was planned to have 10,000 new homes and an estimated population of 25,000.
The Adamstown Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) said the town would include schools, a community centre, a leisure centre with a swimming pool, and a shopping and transport hub.
Adamstown was estimated to take 20 years to complete in 2002 and should have been close to completion today.
But the economic crash in 2008 halted the construction in 2010 leaving the 1,400 completed homes with only a Londis and dry cleaner, in addition to the train station, two primary schools, one secondary school, two creches and a community centre.
What has been delivered?
ADAMSTOWN is currently at development phase four of 13 phases. Time limits are not applied to the phasing of the Adamstown SDZ.
After the economic crash, construction started up again in 2016 and the latest phase was announced in 2021.
American property developer Quintain revealed a €500million investment into a new complex ‘The Crossings’.
Since 2005, around 2,700 homes have been built out of the target of 9,000.
Still to be delivered
IN total Quintain has 1,500 homes under construction or due to commence this year, which will prompt the building of more infrastructure.
Quintain’s €500million investment in Adamstown will include 279 apartments, two major supermarkets, five restaurants and a multi-storey car park.
