Building for a better future – but only if it’s done correctly
CLONBURRIS WHAT HAS BEEN PROMISED:
CLONBURRIS will be 12 minutes from the city centre, between Lucan, Clondalkin and Liffey Valley, and will neighbour Adamstown. It proposes over 8,700 homes with an estimated population of 23,000 people. Around 2,600 of these homes will be social and affordable homes delivered by the South Dublin County Council. The new town has proposed eight schools, two train stations, bus connections and sports pitches. The project was approved by An Bord Pleanála in 2019 but recently the Government has approved a €186.3million funding package. The overall cost of the new town is estimated at €2.54billion.
THE CITY EDGE PROJECT WHAT HAS BEEN PROMISED:
ANNOUNCED last month, the project will build 40,000 new homes for an estimated population of 85,000 by 2070.
City Edge encompasses five districts of Naas Road, Kylemore, Cherry Orchard, Red Cow and Greenhills.
The first 3,500 homes are expected to be completed by 2030 with the opening of new public transport links. Multi-storey car parks will be built and later converted to other uses.
The City Edge Project will be ultimately a car-free development and residents will be expected to walk, cycle or use public transport.
A small amount of parking will be provided for people with disabilities.
Apartment blocks will not be built with underground car parks, previously a requirement of many apartment schemes.
Authorities have said this will reduce construction costs and should result in more affordable homes.
Significant investment in public transport is required with the development of the Lucan Luas line which is included in the Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy.
Around 25,000 people are employed in the area but this is estimated to increase to 75,000.
