Camogie star dies following a short illness

TRIBUTES have been paid to the young Waterford camogie player, Jean O’Loughlin, who died over the weekend after a short illness.

As a mark of respect, a minute’s silence was held during the Waterford Ladies Football final yesterday between Ballymacar­bry and Comeragh Rangers.

Ms O’Loughlin was an active member of St Anne’s Camogie and Ladies Gaelic Football Club in the southeast of Waterford.

In a statement, the club said: ‘It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Jean O’Loughlin following a short illness.

‘Jean played underage for St. Anne’s for many years and was an active playing member for St. Anne’s in adult LGF and Camogie this year.

‘Her sudden passing, at such a young age, has come as a great shock to us all. We extend our deepest sympathy to her parents, Pauline and Paul, her brother Ben, her extended family, her team-mates and her wide circle of friends,’ the statement said.

Waterford Camogie said it was ‘deeply saddened’ to hear of Ms O’Loughlin’s ‘untimely passing’.

‘Jean played underage for St. Anne’s Camogie and Football Clubs and was also an active playing member of their adult teams.

‘Jean proudly represente­d her county in the blue and white U14.

‘We extend our deepest sympathy to Jean’s parents, Pauline and Paul, her brother Ben, her extended family and all her club mates and friends at St Anne’s Camogie and Football Clubs. Rest in peace Jean.’

Ms O’Loughlin began playing camogie at an early age for St. Anne’s and represente­d Waterford Camogie at Under 14 grade in 2016 and 2017 with great distinctio­n.

Waterford Ladies Football announced a minute’s silence in the senior football final yesterday, adding, ‘our condolence­s to Jean’s family, friends, and club mates. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam’.

According to RIP.ie, Ms O’Loughlin’s remains will repose at her home today from 4pm to 8pm before arriving at Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Kill, tomorrow at 11am, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
