Boss tells Dom: Keep working, goals will come

- LEWIS STEELE

SEAN DYCHE has assured Dominic Calvert-Lewin that the goals will come, as the Everton striker bids to end a frustrating barren run. The Toffees front man has just one goal in his last 16 matches, since scoring in an away win at West Ham in October. He missed the best chance of the game yesterday as Everton played out a goalless draw with Aston Villa. But Dyche is confident that Calvert-Lewin (below) will put this bad run behind him. ‘We had a key moment and if that goes in the game changes,’ said Dyche. ‘I keep reminding Dom, the further away it gets the closer the next one gets. One will go in. He did everything right — hit it hard, hit it low, but the keeper made a good save. ‘The stats come back towards you. When I was a centre half, you play against forwards who are flying, I worried less about them than the one who hasn’t scored in a while. ‘Dom needs to keep applying himself, keep running hard, working hard. The minimum requirement is maximum effort, we’re getting that from all of these players and I value it.’ Dyche, who is approaching a year in the Everton job, added: ‘The result was pleasing. Over the last couple of seasons those are the sort of games Everton wouldn’t get something from. The will and desire was good to get a clean sheet against a top side.’ Opposite number Unai Emery said: ‘We created more than them and more than normally we do in away games. But we were not clinical. I think we deserved more than we achieved. But I am happy because we are increasing our level, progressively getting better and being very demanding on how we want to be.’
