‘No justice’ say Corbetts to news Martens will be released early

- By Ian Begley ian.begley @dailymail.ie

JASON Corbett’s family have claimed ‘there’s no justice’ after learning his killers will be released 21 days earlier than expected.

Molly Martens, 40, and her father Thomas Martens, 73, were sentenced on November 8, 2023, to serve between seven to 30 months in prison over the killing of the Limerick father of two, in 2015.

It was later confirmed the pair would be released at the end of

June this year but the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC )has now revealed Tom Martens, a former FBI agent, and his daughter, a former nanny and model, will be released on June 6 – three weeks earlier than expected.

Tom and Molly Martens will have to spend 12 months on parole and will not be allowed to live together as they are both felons. In a statement, the NCDAC said: ‘Today we received amended judgment and commitment documents from the court in Davidson

County for both Thomas Martens and Molly Martens Corbett. Both were amended to include 21 additional days of time served, to correctly reflect the actual number of days served during their first incarcerations. The additional 21 days of time served moves the release dates for both to June 6, 2024. The updated release dates should be reflected on the NCDAC website on Wednesday, after the nightly update.’

Mr Corbett’s family have reacted angrily to the news, with his son Jack Corbett-Lynch, 19, commenting on social media: ‘Both are being released early. There is no justice.’ His sister Sarah added: ‘It is important for individuals to have a chance to heal and recover from their trauma instead of experiencing more of it. #NoJustice #Jason Corbett.’

Jason’s sister Tracey CorbettLynch told the Irish Daily Mail: ‘Our family are disappointed with the latest news. The sentence was and never will be sufficient, Molly and Tom Martens are and will remain killers.’ Mr Corbett’s cousin Nuala Galvin posted on the ‘Jason’s Journey’ Facebook page that his killers are being rewarded. She said: ‘It has now been confirmed that Molly Martens release date has been brought forward by three weeks. ‘Yet again the victims are being punished and the perpetrators are being rewarded. I am so sorry this is happening to you Jack and Sarah.’ The killers previously served 44 months after being convicted in 2017 of second-degree murder. They were sentenced to a minimum of 20 years, but accepted a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter. In December, the NCDAC put out a statement saying Molly and Tom Martens would be released that month but later said that was down to ‘human error’.
