Can the Airwrap finally give me the curls I desire and deserve?

- By Lisa Brady

FIRST things first – when it comes to hair and beauty, I am not a patient person. I don’t have the time to be, nor do I have the inclination. I perfer to leave my hair and skin to the professionals, so TikTok videos and YouTube tutorials are how to look your best self at home are lost on me.

Also, when it comes to my very straight, fine, flyaway hair — I’ve had years of experience of trying and failing to style it myself. It refuses to hold a curl — and certainly not one I try to shape. I have actual scars on my hands from altercations with my curling tongs — of which I have a selection — each one bought in the fervent hope that somehow I could finally create a mop of dreams.

So you can see why I was dubious

‘I have form when it comes to hair fails ’

about all the promises of the Dyson Airwrap. It’s a product that looks a little complicated- with its varying attachments and I have form when it comes to hair fails.

I confess to even having a oneon-one Airwrap masterclass with celebrity stylist and Dyson advocate Dylan Bradshaw who guided me through the basics before I took this baby home to face the task myself. I’ll be honest, it sat unopened for a week in my bedroom. I was afraid; I’ve been here before, and it wasn’t pretty.

Launched in 2018, the Dyson Airwrap has become a phenomenon, having sold millions of units worldwide. Now I’m no engineering buff, but it works a little like this: at the core of the product is a digital motor which helps create what’s called the ‘Coanda’ effect. The motor generates power to create a high-speed jet of air that flows across the surface of the styler attachments. So the aerodynamics of it means it works through airflow combined with heat and for your hair, this means a sleek yet ‘plump’ finish, as there’s no extreme temperatures used.

It’s become almost a staple for the TikTok generation but as a mum of two in my mid-40s I am a very different beast altogether.

Hair washed, part dried and primed for I didn’t know what yet, I plugged in the device and attached the appropriate styling barrels. The moment of truth had arrived. As I brought the Airwrap close to my unsuspecting locks, a gust of wind suddenly erupted from the device, causing my hair to dance wildly in the opposite direction. ‘See!’ my negative self talk smugly piped up, ‘You can’t do it!’ Grr — I was determined — so I did something unthinkable. I watched a tutorial on how to actually use it (a very quick, foolproof video on the “MyDyson” app (essential for first timers), and tried again. Then, things began to make sense as sections of my hair behaved with the way the airflow of the thing was going.

As I continued my valiant struggle, my once straight-forward mission to achieve luscious curls at home was coming to life in my very own hands!

Little by little my flat barnet came to life- as the strands wound into the powerful airflow of the handy device. I can attest it really is as good as the reviews.

The satisfaction of seeing my hair actually be styled by my own two hands — priceless. Although price has to be mentioned — at €550, this is not a cheap tool. But after experimenting with this thing — changing direction of air flow for different styles, for example — once I got the hang of it, it was nothing short of revolutionary. It’s an intuitive piece of kit, which does the hard work for you. I got into a pattern of styling on warm heat for 20 seconds, then switching to cool setting for ten seconds for a longer lasting finish.

And the more I use it, the quicker and more adept I become at getting what I’ve always wanted —

‘I’ve got the 90s supermodel hair I always wanted’

90s supermodel hair — and even when I have no time at all, just a sleek blowdry using one of the flat brush attachments.

It’s a journey, but believe me when I tell you, if I can conquer this kit, anyone can.

This is an investment ladies, and given the cost, not a decision to be taken lightly. But think of it like that designer coat you adore and wear to death. The AirWrap will work out for your pocket in terms of cost per use as once you start, well, there’s no going back. I’m a convert. O Each Dyson Airwrap multistyler can be customised with a range of attachments to suit the user’s hair type, length and style. The Dyson Airwrap multi-styler original is €549.95, Blue Blush is €599.99, available now from Dyson Demo Zones and Dyson.ie.
