- BY KATHRYN BATTE

THE Women’s Super League title race was blown wide open this weekend when MANCHESTER CITY beat CHELSEA to go level on points with the leaders. Bunny Shaw (left) fired home in the first half to give Gareth Taylor’s side victory at Kingsmeadow on Friday night. ARSENAL then closed the gap on both teams to three points with a convincing win over MANCHESTER UNITED in front of a sold-out 60,160 Emirates. The Gunners led 3-0 at halftime after an own goal from Geyse off a Katie McCabe corner, a strike from Chloe Lacasse and a Kim Little penalty. Lucia Garcia netted a consolation for Marc Skinner’s side but they now find themselves 10 points off top spot and seven away from the final Champions League space, occupied by Arsenal. United’s defeat allowed LIVERPOOL to close the gap on fourth place with a 1-0 victory over BRIGHTON. A mistake from goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley allowed Ceri Holland to score the only goal of the game. The midfielder was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card but the Reds held on. TOTTENHAM suffered a surprise 2-1 home defeat by ASTON VILLA. Adriana Leon gave Carla Ward’s side the lead in the 23rd minute before Amy Turner brought the hosts level. Former Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs netted the winner for the visitors on the hour mark. EVERTON scored a quickfire double to beat WEST HAM 2-0 and claim their first league win of the year. Two goals in three minutes from Martina Piemonte and Aurora Galli saw the Toffees go above their rivals into ninth. BRISTOL CITY remain rooted to the bottom of the table despite going ahead against LEICESTER. Ffion Morgan put the Robins in front but goals from Nicole Momiki and Saori Takarada turned the tables before half-time. Amalie Thestrup levelled after the break but Janice Cayman, Jutta Rantala and Denny Draper scored to seal a 5-2 victory.
