Head down to exhibition and see some Welch rare bits

- By Christian McCashin

NEVER-seen-before costumes and personal items belonging to Hollywood bombshell Raquel Welch are on display in Newbridge.

The Museum of Style Icons at Newbridge Silverware in Co. Kildare has opened a new exhibition called One In A Million, which runs until April 1. It features garments, gowns, jewellery and personal items once worn by the star, who died last year aged 82.

It is the only European exhibition for the public to view this ‘never before seen’ collection of the superstar’s iconic items prior to its sale by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles on April 12.

Ms Welch burst onto the scene in 1966 with her role as a scientist’s assistant in the Oscar-winning sci-fi film Fantastic Voyage, and later that year, her turn in the fantasy movie One Million Years BC.

The publicity poster of a scantily clad Welch as a cavewoman in her iconic fur and hide bikini became a phenomenon. Although she only had three lines in the film, it turned her into a global sex symbol.

People can see a suede and fauxfur bikini in the style of the one worn wore by Ms Welch in One Million Years BC in the exhibition.

Also on display is a replica of the costume worn in the movie Myra Breckinridge, Ms Welch’s 1974 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in The Three Musketeers, and the ‘Flapper Dress’ she donned in the 1975 James Ivory-directed comedy drama The Wild Party.

William Doyle, CEO of Newbridge Silverware, said: ‘We are delighted to have the chance to showcase this piece of Hollywood history and are grateful to Julien’s Auctions for bringing the property to us.’ See newbridgesilverware.com for details. Entry is free and the exhibition is open seven days a week.
