Murphy’s powerful side too strong for Wales

- By JAMES MURRAY

ANY notions that Richie Murphy’s impending move to Ulster would unsettle this Ireland U20 team were dispelled last night as the hosts demolished their Welsh counterparts 43-8 at a packed Musgrave Park in Cork. Murphy is set to head for Belfast at the conclusion of this tournament to take over the province in a caretaker role after Dan McFarland stepped down after six years in the gig earlier this week. It is due reward for Murphy who has done sterling work at this level in recent years. The class of 2024 look on course to securing a hat-trick of Grand Slams, an unprecedented achievement in the championship and it would be a fitting way for Murphy to conclude this chapter of his coaching career. In truth, this group have yet to hit the heights of their stunning opening win away in France, following up with a nervy win against Italy – who shocked France 23-20 last night – and this resounding, if error-strewn display. They remain a potent outfit, however. And they have some real star power in their ranks. Captain Evan O’Connell, centre Hugh Gavin and out-half Jack Murphy to the fore once more. First-half tries from flanker Seán Edogbo and Gavin, a real handful in midfield, eased the hosts into 17-3 lead at the break as both sides struggled in the wet conditions swirling around. It was all one-way traffic after the break, however, as Henry Walker and Ben O’Connor crossed for tries while replacement hooker Danny Sheahan bagged a brace on the back of two surging lineout mauls. A big result to cap off a big week for Murphy.
