Leads, camera, action!

IT was more Doggywood than Hollywood as these pampered pooches got to enjoy their own trip to the cinema. Dozens of pedigree chums enjoyed the film Lady And The Tramp at a special doggy day out at the 39-seat private Dot Theatre, near Fitzwilliam Square, in central Dublin. The 25 dogs and their 30 owners attended the screening, and the event proved so popular that two more screenings are already planned to cope with demand. April’s screening of Disney’s cartoon 101 Dalmatians is already sold out, and The Fox And The Hound will be screened in May.

Dog-lover and organiser Nikki O’Carroll said her ideas ‘always come from things I’d like to be able to include’ her dogs in. ‘Saturday’s event is the first one but I host a variety of pet-friendly events, from breed meet-ups to doggy Christmas markets and now doggy cinema screenings.’

Dogs that enjoyed a day at the movies included a Bernese mountain dog, cavalier King Charles, Labradors, Samoyed husky and poodle crosses. Lisa Sheeran, from Clonaslee, Co. Laois, who went with her 55kg one-yearold Dogue de Bordeaux Vinnie, said: ‘We had a fabulous day. All the dogs were so good. It was so funny to see them all intrigued with the film as it had other dogs in it. I came prepared thinking there might be some mayhem with so many types of different dogs but honestly there wasn’t any trouble with barking etc.’

Ms O’Carroll, from Dublin, is also planning a St Patrick’s Doggy Day Out on March 17, with market stalls and a doggy fashion show while the Dublin parade plays on a big screen. She said: ‘My goal is to make Ireland a more dogfriendly place and if that means I have to plan the events myself, then that’s what I’ll do.’
