Maguire well down as local ace takes Thai title

-

LEONA MAGUIRE shot a final round of 72 to finish the LPGA Thailand in 31st place.

The was 13 shots behind local favourite Patty Tavatanakit, who held off a fastfinishing Albane Valenzuela to clinch the title by one stroke.

The 24-year-old Bangkok native showcased her prowess with a brilliant approach shot to tap in an easy birdie on the final hole to card a final round 67, finishing at 21 under-par-267 at Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course.

‘I’m speechless. I was so nervous and choked a bit as there are many Thai fans showing up,’ said Tavatanakit, whose triumph marked her second LPGA victory since her win at the ANA Inspiration in 2021.

England’s Bronte Law carded a final-round 64 to take victory at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco.

The 28-year-old had an eagle, nine birdies and two bogeys in the third round to finish the event on 13 under.

Three of Law’s birdies came on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes before the ‘turning point’ of an eagle at 14.

She ended up winning by three shots after Pauline Roussin-Bouchard of France had bogeys on the last two holes to drop to 10 under.

Ireland’s Lauren Walsh was 12 strokes behind after a 74, while Olivia Mehaffy was at the tail of the field after a 78.

In Vallarta last night, Padraig Harrington picked up birdies on the 15th and 17th to card a one under par 70 in the final round of the Mexico Open. The Dubliner finished four under overall, tied 52nd.

Meanwhile, delivery driver Joe Dean finished a life-changing week at the Kenya Open with a closing 67 as he finished in a tie for second behind Darius van Driel in Nairobi.

Dutchman Van Driel carded a closing 67 to get to 14 under and finish two shots clear of Dean and Spaniard Nacho Elvira, with England’s Matthew Jordan at 11 under, one ahead of Scottish pair Ewen Ferguson and Connor Syme

Despite the season starting the week after, Dean did not tee it up until the Qatar Masters earlier this month as he did not have the money to fund a career on the tour.
