Chance of snow drifts away ...but it’ll still be FREEZING!

- By Ian Begley

YOU can leave your toboggan in the garden shed – the weekend’s snowy wonderland scenes are unlikely to be repeated any day soon.

It will be a wet, windy and chilly week ahead with little to no chances of the white stuff, Met Éireann has said. But that’s not to say it won’t be cold.

Today will start off mainly dry in most parts before rain and strong winds set in. It will be a windy night, especially in the west, with scattered outbreaks of rain. Temperatures will fall to as low as -1C in fresh to strong southerly winds, easing and veering westerly by morning. Tomorrow will be mainly dry with sunny spells and a chance of showers. Highest temperatures will be 8 to 11 degrees, while tonight will become ‘quite breezy’.

The forecaster predicts Wednesday will be a ‘dull day’ with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, most persistent over the western half of the country. However, temperatures will rise to 13 degrees in moderate southeasterly winds.

It will be a blustery day on Thursday with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, with similar conditions predicted for Friday and the weekend.

Meanwhile, Bookies are offering odds that March will be the coldest on record. Met Éireann’s seasonal outlook says ‘March has the possibility of colder outbreaks from the north and northeast at times’. However, the March, April and May period is predicted to have ‘above average’ temperatures overall.

Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly has also indicated there is a chance of ‘sudden stratospheric warming happening, which could have some impacts on weather for March’. He said this could mean the possibility of colder weather.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes are now offering odds of 4/1 that this month will be the coldest March on record.
