‘Our mothers hold up the world...’

- By Garreth MacNamee

THE prosecco was popped and the bouquets of flowers were on show as some of Ireland’s best-known faces gave or received the star treatment for Mother’s Day yesterday.

Mammies across the nation were showered with cards, flowers and chocolates, with thousands of people sharing some candid snaps with the women who raised them.

Some of the nation’s more familiar faces were also on hand to lavish praise and love on their mothers.

TV presenter Maura Derrane was one of the many to post pictures of her family. With her mother Bridgie and her sister Barbara, she enjoyed a sumptuous-looking lunch at the Botanic Gardens in Dublin.

Pop star Una Healy also revealed how her mam hates any fuss on the big day while also explaining what her own kids do for her.

‘My mother hates any fuss but I like to give her a nice card and maybe some flowers,’ said Una. ‘My children are so cute. They create personalised cards for me and are adamant about preparing a breakfast in bed, with a menu!’

Politicians also got in on the act and described what their mothers mean to them. Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald said: ‘Our mothers hold up the world and make it turn. Thank you, Joan, for everything you’ve done for us, for everything you continue to do.

‘Here’s to all the mammies out there working minor miracles every day and making it happen for their kids with so much love.’

Former GAA star Paddy Andrews posted a tribute to his wife Doireann on her first Mother’s Day. Sharing a shot while holidaying in Tenerife, the former Dublin star wrote: ‘Happy Mother’s Day to Supermom Doireann. Great few days away to celebrate with the little man too.’
