A FORMER RTÉ sports commentator has made a settlement of €129,759 with the Revenue, as disclosed in the tax defaulters list published yesterday.

Brian Carthy, of Terenure, Dublin, is described as a journalist ‘trading as Sliabh Ban Productions’, according to Revenue.

The tax due in his case for underdeclaration of income tax, PAYE/ PRSI, USC and VAT was €67,259, with interest of €42,775 and penalties of €19,725, making the total settlement €129,759.

In a statement to RTÉ on the matter, Mr Carthy said he had invested in property at the height of the Celtic Tiger which had a devastating impact on his financial wellbeing. ‘I have always met my obligations and worked tirelessly over the years since the crash to discharge my obligations to financial institutions and the Revenue Commissioners,’ he said. ‘The issues with the Revenue Commissioners are rooted in these historic transactions which only came to light in recent years.’

He added: ‘When I realised there may be issues, I openly engaged with the Revenue Commissioners to resolve the matter.’

Mr Carthy left RTÉ in 2020 after more than three decades in the role of Gaelic games correspondent/ commentator. He controversially never got the opportunity to commentate on an All-Ireland intercounty senior final. There was a major furore in 2011 when some of the GAA’s biggest names, including his close friend Mickey Harte and Brian Cody, sent a four-page letter to the then RTÉ director-general Noel Curran informing him that they were boycotting the organisation over the perceived downgrading of Mr Carthy’s duties.

Revenue yesterday published details of 16 tax settlement cases totalling €5million from October 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.

Transmedix, a Cork-based medical staff provider, of 12 Woodvale, Heron’s Wood, Carrigaline, topped the latest tax defaulters list with a settlement of €586,600 for non-declaration of corporation tax and PAYE/PRSI/USC. According to Revenue, €463,309 of the Transmedix settlement was unpaid as of December 31 2023.

Ina’s Kitchen Desserts, of Unit 3, South City Business Park, Tallaght, Dublin, a cake manufacturer trading as Broderick’s, made a settlement of €535,069 for under-declaration of corporation tax, PAYE/PRSI/USC and VAT.

Mark Hoste, a UK-based landlord, of Flat 3, Ash Lodge, Chester Road, Poynton, Cheshire, made a settlement of €523,154 for under-declaration of capital acquisitions tax.

Dublin-based software firm The Big Red Book Company, of Rathdown Hall, Upper Glenageary Road, Glenageary, made a settlement of €464,568 for under-declaration of PAYE/PRSI/USC. Graham De Barra, a cryptocurrency trader with an address of Rua Praia 2, Ribeira Seca, Portugal, made a settlement of €202,109 for under-declaration of income tax. The total amount was unpaid as of December 31, 2023.

Revenue has also published details of 111 court-determined penalties and fines. Three court-determined penalties amounted to €198,911, while 108 court-determined fines during the period totalled €238,082.
