LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING TO RAIN ON OUR PARADE

- By Garreth MacNamee

ST PATRICK may have banished the snakes from Ireland... but he couldn’t get rid of the showers.

We’ve got a rainy few days in store as the Bank Holiday weekend nears – and a Status Orange weather warning is in place this morning for large parts of the southwest with downpours due.

The Orange rain warning from Met Éireann is in place for Cork and Kerry until midday. A Yellow warning is in place for Waterford.

Cork, Kerry and Waterford are all vulnerable to flooding due to the adverse weather, the forecaster added.

It looks like the rest of the country will be cloudy and wet for most of the week and into St Patrick’s weekend.

But it will be mild at least with temperatures reaching around 14C today. The forecaster said today will be ‘mostly cloudy and wet... with spells of rain, heavy at times with the chance of flooding, especially in the south and southwest and west’. It added: ‘Some drier and brighter spells may develop in Munster and south Leinster later.’

Tomorrow night, the chill returns; it will be cold with a touch of frost possible with lowest temperatures of -1C to 3C. On Saturday, rain will extend nationwide, with persistent showers.

On St Patrick’s Day on Sunday, there will be a slight reprieve from the rain, but only for a short while.

The forecaster added: ‘Mist and low cloud is expected to clear on Sunday to leave a day of sunny spells and scattered showers. However, there is the chance of a spell of persistent rain developing in the southwest later. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15C in a moderate southwest breeze.’

Early indications are that Bank Holiday Monday will see overnight rain clear to sunshine and showers. A further spell of rain is likely to move in from the Atlantic later in the day.
