Children hospitalised after firebomb attack on home

- By Garreth MacNamee

TWO children were among four people who were hospitalised after a home was firebombed in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The arson attack happened on Aylmer Drive in Newcastle, west Dublin, at around 5am. A suspected petrol bomb was thrown through the front window of the property causing significant damage to the home and the car parked out front.

Members of Dublin Fire Brigade rescued three of the people in the house from an upstairs window. All four were brought to hospital but their injuries are believed not to be life-threatening.

Detectives in west Dublin are now investigating the motive behind the attack, but believe it was carried out by someone known to the family.

Sources have told the Mail a personal grudge may have caused the attack on the home. They said: ‘There was a lot of damage done to that house and it is just a miracle that nobody was seriously injured in this attack. Detectives are going to look at the motives behind this and they are currently working on the theory that someone had a personal grudge against someone in the house.

‘Gardaí are going to speak with the occupants of the house when they are in a fit state but, with young children being injured in this way, you can imagine they’re not in a fit state at the minute.’

Door-to-door inquiries are being carried out and CCTV from the area is being harvested in an attempt to get a precise timeline of the incident.

Our source added: ‘An attack like this is not spur of the moment. It’s not like somebody lost their head and lashed out. This took planning. They knew the family was home.’
