HSE rolls out measles jab campaign

- By Helen Bruce

THE HSE has launched its measles vaccination catch-up campaign following a rise in cases in the UK and Europe.

There have been five confirmed cases of measles here this year, including one man who died from the disease.

Dr Lucy Jessop, director of the HSE National Immunisation Office, said: ‘Measles is highly infectious and can be an acute and serious infection. It causes a rash illness, with cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis and high fever.

‘The only protection against measles is vaccination. Two doses of MMR vaccine are needed, and if a child or young adult is not fully protected, then MMR vaccines can be obtained from your GP or HSE vaccination clinic.’

The campaign focuses on delivering the MMR vaccine to key groups – children, young adults, health and care workers – who may have missed their vaccines in the past.

Additionally, the HSE will also provide targeted clinics for specific cohorts including students and young people in education settings, together with underserved groups including refugees, applicants seeking protection, Travellers, the homeless and other minority groups.

It is estimated that around 11% of the population aged between 18 and 34 are not immune to measles.

MMR vaccines are available free from GPs to all groups, but primarily to those under 18 years, and from HSE community clinics for everyone eligible who is aged five years and over.

A list of vaccination clinics can be found at www.hse.ie, with a link to book an appointment. Some walk-in appointments are also available.

Most people born before 1978 have built a natural immunity to measles, but anyone concerned can get the vaccine. Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne, Dr Lois O’Connor, a public health medicine consultant, said anyone unsure if they are vaccinated can contact their HSE local health offices to see their vaccination record.
