Snow surprise as Met Éireann warns of ‘wintry falls’ today

- By Ian Begley

DON’T put away your winter coat just yet as we may see outbreaks of snow this weekend, Met Éireann has warned.

Less than a month after snow covered many parts of Ireland for one day, another surprise weather event may be in store for us today.

And as temperatures continue to dip, Met Éireann said the outlook for the coming days is ‘unsettled and rather cool’ for this time of year.

Today will be fairly windy with sunny spells and showers, and the continued chance of hail and thunder. However, ‘some wintry falls’ may occur this morning on high ground.

Similar conditions were forecast the day before the widespread snowfall on March 1. However, the forecaster has repeatedly stated that snow is often difficult to predict and said at the time that it would have needed a crystal ball to predict that amount of snowfall.

Today, there will be highs of 6C to 10C, which will feel colder during fresh to strong northwest winds.

Tonight will be cold and breezy with clear spells and scattered showers, while tomorrow will start out dry in most areas with ‘just the odd shower’.

However, rain will develop in the southwest during the morning, spreading across Connacht, Munster and south Leinster by the afternoon. Rain will then extend nationwide in the evening, becoming widespread during the night.

It looks set to be a cloudy and wet day on Monday with outbreaks of rain and the chance of spot flooding, before easing later in the night. Temperatures will fall between 3C and 6C. The rest of the week looks set to stay unsettled.
