Garnacho clears air... now it’s over to Sancho

- By CHRIS WHEELER

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO has apologised for having a dig at manager Erik ten Hag on social media — but there appears to be no way back at Manchester United for Jadon Sancho unless he does the same. Ten Hag believes Garnacho will learn from his mistake and was keen to move on from the issue ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup semi-final against Coventry. Garnacho liked comments accusing Ten Hag of ‘throwing him under the bus’ by substituting him at half-time against Bournemouth. Asked if the incident hinted at discord in the dressing room, Ten Hag said: ‘I wouldn’t point to that. Alejandro is a young player, he has to learn a lot. He apologised and we move on.’ United have been less sympathetic towards Sancho, who posted a message on social media in September effectively branding Ten Hag a liar over his reasons for dropping him at Arsenal. The winger was forced to train on his own and rejoined Borussia Dortmund on loan in January. Sancho has progressed in Germany and helped Dortmund reach the semi-finals of the

Champions League by beating Atletico Madrid. It has raised the issue of a potential return to United, but Ten Hag indicated that Sancho’s refusal to apologise is the main sticking point. Asked if anything has changed, he replied: ‘No, but we know Jadon is a fantastic player, so that is not a surprise for us. That is not the issue. ‘Of course, I follow the players on loan. It was a fantastic game, Dortmund against Atletico Madrid. It was a great performance from Dortmund and for Jadon it’s good news.’ Meanwhile, United last night confirmed the appointment of Jason Wilcox as technical director. The former winger, who won the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1995, has left his role as director of football at Southampton after the clubs agreed a compensatiion fee. Wilcox, 53, spent 11 years at Manchester City as academy director before moving to the south coast in January 2023.
