IT’S SUPER ‘HATE’ FROM BANNER BOSS MOLONEY
CLARE joint-manager Donal Moloney would “hate” to see the removal of the Munster hurling Championship – unless a viable alternative is put forward. Former Hurler of the Year and current Clare star Tony Kelly recently suggested scrapping the provincial series – and replacing it with a super eight or super 10 format something supported by Derek Mcgrath of Waterford. But Moloney said: “From a Clare vantage point and maybe a selfish perspective, the Munster Championship for so long was a Holy Grail. “It motivated and demoralised many Clare teams and we haven’t had the best record in it for the bones of 20 years. There’s always been a certain magic around the Munster Championship and while I know there’s a school of thought that some of the finals in recent times haven’t been vintage, and that’s true, but in the early 1980s some of the finals weren’t vintage either – and that changed. “Maybe call us traditionalist but the Munster Championship has a magic and bite to it. “Let’s be very clear – if you move from your traditions, you have to be very clear about what will replace that. “You’d have to think about a super eight and how do you get in and out of it, what will that do for teams outside of it. “We grew up on the magic of the Munster Championship.” Moloney, meanwhile, has confirmed that the Ballyea contingent are available for Sunday’s crucial Division 1A clash at home to Waterford.
