A rockers Warpaint are back this weekend to play an intimate show at Dublin’s Vicar St. The lo-fi, psychedelic indie rock band return to the capital following a stunning sold-out appearance at the National Concert Hall last August.

The all-female foursome, Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Theresa Wayman (guitar, vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, backing vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums), who joined the band in 2009, are currently touring their critically acclaimed third studio album Heads Up, which was released via Rough Trade Records last September.

Heads Up was recorded after the band spent 2015 apart working on solo projects. Reuniting in January 2016, the band started to work with producer Jacob Bercovici, whom they had worked on their debut Ep‘exquisite Corpse.

The album was recorded in House on The Hill Studio in downtown LA, their home studios and Papap’s Palace and for the first time ever, recorded in pairs and alone rather than as a full band.

Discussing the recording process drummer Stella Mozgawa said, “The doors were a little more open in terms of what was accepted and what wasn’t, because we were sharing ideas so rapidly between us.

Bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg added, “Everybody was allowed to have their space, time and creative freedom with songs and figure out, ‘I wonder what the best notes would be? I wonder what the best instrument would be to play?”

She added: “Everybody got to sit and go, ‘What do I want to do to this? What’s my part? What’s my role? How can I make it the best?

“I feel really proud of what we made – almost surprised,” said Linberg.

“When we were making it, I was like ‘I wonder what this is going to sound like? How’s this going to come together so nicely? I feel so proud of it, and like it’s an evolution of our band. It sounds like a mature version of Warpaint.”

play Vicar Street Sunday 26 March 2017. Tickets €26.50/€34.50, available at Ticketmaster.
