Karls scores two as the Leesiders make it six from six & go six points clear

- JOHN MORGAN

CORK City have eased six points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity League as they laid down a significent title race marker with a 2-1 voctory over champions Dundalk. On a beautiful day on Leeside, the Rebels played all the sunshine football and for a change top scorer Seanie Maguire turned provider for two-goal hero Karl Sheppard. The man of the match said: “I think it’s a matter of consistency as we know when we are on song that we can beat any team that is out there. “It’s about going out there and giving our all every week. If you look at our squad this season we have a bit more quality and quantity about us.” The striker added: “It was an important home win and a big three points for us but I’m not sure if you would call it a statement but it is much better to be on top rather than chasing as we have been in the last few years. “Look, it’s a long, long season and you can’t be getting too carried away. We know that. “We have Limerick away on Friday night and then home to Derry so they are two more tough matches,” Sheppard, who has now netted 23 goals in 66 appearances for the club continued: “I am doing okay. At the start of the season I wasn’t too happy as I was not in the team. “I got my chance against Dundalk on Saturday and scored twice so I want to keep going and keep my place in the team. As long as we are winning then I am happy. “The gaffer knows that I am not happy when I am not in the team. I am a vocal person so he knows that’s the case. “When I am playing and we are winning then I am the happiest man around. “I knew that I had to take my chance or else someone would come in next week and take it so hopefully I have given the manager a headache now when it comes to his team selection for Limerick,” he added. In the other two Premier League games on Saturday, Bohs climbed to fourth when they defeated Drogheda and Finn Harps edged out Sligo.
