WONDERFUL GIG FOR STEVIE FANS AT RORY WEDDING
couple find secluded beauty spot to hear music icon’s set
A COUPLE couldn’t believe their luck when they found a secluded spot to listen to Stevie Wonder perform at Rory Mcilroy’s wedding.
While security had Ashford Castle in lockdown, Phil Monaghan and Amanda Hickey found a location just off the perimeter and saw the Superstition legend’s 90-minute set. Phil, 46, told the Irish Mirror: “We are big fans but you would never in your wildest imagination dream of hearing Stevie Wonder on the shore of Lough Corrib. “There’s an area in front of Lisloughrey Lodge where there’s a few rocks and boats. “We knew Stevie’s band were parked in blacked out vans so we knew when they left that they were going to be playing shortly.
SONGS
“Where we were a couple of hundred people gathered but we knew a secluded part to listen to the music. “We went with some wine and snacks and sat on a few nice rocks where we could see the sky lights shining from the castle, it was a really great location. “The music lasted about 90 minutes, he played all his songs.” Phil, from Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, told how Co Down golf ace Mcilroy, 27, even did a duet with his 29-year-old bride Erica. He added: “Rory interacted with all the guests, he obviously prepared very well. “For Signed Sealed Delivered, they got him to sing a part of that with Erica singing ‘I’m yours’.” Despite rumours of Ed Sheeran and Coldplay playing, Stevie was the only star who performed. Phil said: “That’s all who played when we were there. “We waited a while after he finished up and nothing else.” While Phil and Amanda had a great night, others who had travelled from as far as Donegal were left disappointed. Phil explained: “When the music stopped we heard there weren’t going to be fireworks. “We went back to Loughrea at about 12.30 and they were waiting for the fireworks.”

A COUPLE lapped up Stevie Wonder’s set at Rory Mcilroy’s wedding – for free.
They sneaked into a bolthole and cracked open a bottle of wine to enjoy the music. With all that security, just as well they’re not superstitious.
