Jaws-ome catch mate

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

A FRANK Sinatra impersonator landed one of the biggest sharks ever caught in Irish waters and saw its “pearly whites” up close. The enormous 450lbs porbeagle shark, a cousin of the deadly Great White, was caught in the Celtic Sea by professional swing singer Jay Oxenham off the coast of Corwall in the Celtic Sea. The 46-year-old who performs all over Europe, spent almost two hours tussling with the 8ft long beast which was “as wide as a cow” after it went for his mackerel bait. It was far too big to lift on board the boat so all Jay could do was bring it alongside to measure and photograph – before releasing it safe and well. Jay said: “I love catching sharks. They are amazing creatures and just getting them alongside the boat or in the boat is great. “I had no idea how big the porbeagle was at first but after wrestling with it for half an hour I knew it was a big fish. “I was fighting it for one and three quarter hours. My forearms were in agony and I was worried I was going to lose my rod. “The last 15 minutes I had to put it in a harness. We eventually managed to get it up against the boat and take some pictures. “My son John was with me and he had never seen a porbeagle before. “We had to pick his jaw up off the floor.”
