Ansari quits at 25.. Tests were no fun

- EXCLUSIVE BY DEAN WILSON

ENGLAND’S Zafar Ansari has retired aged 25 – revealing he did not enjoy Test match cricket and questioned whether he was good enough. Now a career as a human rights lawyer beckons for the brainbox surrey all-rounder. Ansari (above), who graduated from Cambridge University with a double first in politics, philosophy and sociology, made his Test debut in october against Bangladesh before playing two Tests in India. The left-arm spinner said: “After seven years as a professional cricketer and almost two decades in total playing the game, I have decided to bring my cricket career to an end. “This has been a very difficult decision to make and I have not made it lightly. “I think over the last three years, I’ve felt like I’ve been going on an upward slope with my cricket in general. “And then you go on a tour like that and it reminds you of your limitations definitely and emphasises them. “For a long time I’ve wanted to play Test cricket and then you go and do it and it is hard – and not a lot of fun – and you underperform and it changes what Test cricket means to you.”
