IT’S set to be a summer of star-spotting as Ireland is poised to play host to top film and TV productions

The next few months will see Game the return of worldwide hit of Thrones in the North and Vikings in Co Wicklow, with several movies also set to shoot here over the summer. In what is a vibrant time for the Irish film industry, the cameras are due to start rolling on a bunch of new productions – starting with a Phil movie about rock legend Lynott. Next weekend, dozens of actors are expected to gather in Dublin to take part in auditions for a new documentary about the Thin Lizzy frontman’s rise to stardom. The movie – to be directed by top filmmaker Jim Sheridan and Mattress Men director Colm Quinn – will focus on how Lynott became one of the most-loved rockers ever to come out of Ireland. Filmmakers are looking for an actor/musician to play him in several key scenes. Filming is due to take place in several of the musician’s favourite stomping grounds around Dublin this summer. Sheridan said: “Having known Phil, and loving his music from the very start, it’s a great honour to celebrate his life and work on the big screen. “I can’t wait to start the process of finding our modern-day rocker.” Later in the summer, director Neil Jordan will team up with A-lister Liam Neeson to film The Trainer in various locations in the West of Ireland. Set around the colourful world of the horse racing industry, Neeson will play a downon-his-luck trainer who is beset by tragedy. He forms an unlikely alliance with a teenage refugee and they become invested in a horse who may have one big race left in him. Later this summer in the North, the cameras are due to start Red rolling on River, a new thriller from Dracula Untold director Gary Shore. The cast has yet to be announced for the sexy new movie, about a bloodthirsty vampire who sets out to avenge a murder in an isolated town. This week it was announced that Irish actress Sarah Bolger will team up with US heart-throb Logan Lerman for a road trip drama set in Ireland. Filming across the country End Of begins this month on Sentence , a romantic comedy which will see the Irish actress team up with the Perks Of Being A Wallflower star. The film tells the story of an ex-con who comes to Dublin with his dad to scatter his mum’s ashes. The Young Offenders was one of the smash hit Irish comedies of last year, and following a deal between RTE and the BBC, the film is to get a TV series spinoff which begins filming in Cork next month. Writer/director Peter Foott returns and the film’s young stars Alex Murphy and Chris Walley are back to play Jock and Conor, two mischievous teenagers who tried to steal a bale of cocaine to better their lives in the movie. In the next few weeks, Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope star Seana Kerslake will start The Hole In filming The Ground. She plays a troubled young mother in the thriller, which is being backed by the Irish Film Board.
