SAM’S EAGLES DON’T GET OFF THE GROUND

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL

SAM ALLARDYCE has already turned his thoughts to strengthening his Crystal Palace squad after guiding them to Premier League safety. Palace embarked on a remarkable winning run to ensure survival, taking the scalps of three of the top five, but lacked any intensity yesterday. Allardyce (above) still paid tribute to his men, saying: “Beating Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool was a great thrill and without those victories we’d be relegated, down and out. “It was just a shame we didn’t do a bit better today. “We’ll be making decisions on a few players in the coming days, then dipping into the transfer market. “Two shots on target, two goals for United. Firsthalf was average, and the goals were avoidable, but we had a go in the secondhalf. “There wasn’t the same pressure on the players today, but we did a lot better in the second-half.” Angel Gomes, who at 16 years and 262 days became United’s youngest player since the legendary Duncan Edwards in 1953, said: “It’s a dream come true. “I’ve been here since the age of six, working my way up and it’s what everyone dreams about. I’m from Manchester. . Salford and it’s literally down the road. It’s just unbelievable. “I saw Eric Bailly go down and we had already made two subs. The boss told me to warm up and then I heard my name.” Gomes (below) added: “I felt the players made it easy for me really. “The lads supported me and helped me, telling me what to do so I thank them for that. “Duncan Edwards was a great player and a United legend. It’s an honour to be the youngest since him.”
