DRIVERS WARNED TO SLOW DOWN IN SAFETY CAMPAIGN

MOTORISTS have been urged to slow down and be careful after a driver was caught going 40kmh over the speed limit yesterday.

Gardai said as part of their Operation Slowdown campaign, Gosafe cameras checked 86,000 vehicles from 7am. A statement said: “The vast majority of drivers are safe and are complying with the speed limit. “Remember speed limits are the maximum permitted in perfect driving conditions. “Road weather and traffic conditions may require you to reduce your speed further.” Cameras found 170 vehicles travelling over the limit, with the worst offender spotted at 100kmh in a 60kmh zone on the R418 at Youngstown, Athy, Co Kildare. Another person was travelling at 109kmh in a 80kmh zone on the R513 at Ballyfausk­een, Ballylande­rs, Co Limerick. The offenders were listed as follows: 65kmh in a 50kmh zone on the N80 Main Street, Stradbally, Laois 82kmh in a 60kmh zone on the R563 at Faha East, Faha, Kerry 65kmh in a 50kmh zone on the Phibsborou­gh Road, Dublin 7 95kmh in a 60kmh zone on the R463 at Gortatoghe­r, Ardnacrush­a, Clare 94kmh in a 60kmh zone on the N25 at Raheen, New Ross, Kilkenny 121kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N15 at Mount Temple, Grange, Sligo The Road Safety Authority is advising drivers to exercise caution this weekend. RSA chief Moyagh Murdock said: “Roads are at their most slippery when the weather breaks after a dry spell. When the weather breaks, this deposit mixes with rainwater and the road becomes hazardous.”
