Lucan wife: I begged him not to murder me

She recalls night when nanny was killed

- BY MARTIN BAGOT

LORD Lucan’s wife has revealed how she implored him not to murder her after their children’s nanny was bludgeoned to death. Giving her full version of events for the first time, Lady Lucan describes confronting her husband moments after Sandra Rivett was killed in 1974. Lady Lucan tells a TV documentary: “I said to him, ‘Please don’t kill me, John’. And then I asked, ‘Where’s Sandra?’ And he said, ‘She’s dead. Don’t look’.” Now 78, Lady Lucan says the chilling exchange took place in the basement of their home. The 7th Earl is believed to have killed Sandra, 29, at the property in Central London after mistaking her for his estranged wife. Lady Lucan was also beaten over the head with a length of lead pipe. She told detectives it was her husband who attacked her. Lord Lucan vanished the night of the murder in Belgravia. His whereabouts have sparked decades of speculation. For years Lady Lucan has refused to co-operate with film-makers eager to shed light on one of the UK’S most notorious murder mysteries. The ITV documentary – Lord Lucan: My Husband, The Truth – being aired next Monday includes unseen footage of the family.she also reveals that relations between her and her husband became strained almost as soon as they settled down to married life. Lady Lucan says: “He talked to me more before our marriage than ever he did afterwards. He said, ‘That’s the point of being married, you don’t have to talk to the person’.” She also discusses her husband’s reckless lifestyle, his debts and the bitter custody battle over their three children, which the earl lost days before Sandra was murdered. Lady Lucan will also say what she thinks happened to him. She previously said she believes he committed suicide by jumping into the propellers of a ship in the Channel. Lucan, who was born in 1934, was declared dead last year at the High Court. There have been unconfirmed sightings of him across the world over the years. Ten years ago, he was said to have been living in a car in New Zealand. In other claims, he had become a hippy in India called Jungle Barry.
