Longford hunt for new boss

- BY PAUL BUTTNER

LONGFORD TOWN have sought applications for their vacant manager’s post following Alan Mathews’ departure. Mathews (above), the most successful manager in Longford’s history during his previous stint at Mullollogher, left by ‘mutual consent’ according to a club statement. The news was tinged with some irony given it came after Town’s 5-0 defeat of Wexford at City Calling Stadium on Saturday night, their biggest win of the season, though a game watched by just 211 spectators. Though the victory lifted Town up a place to fifth in the table, they are 13 points off leaders Waterford whom they were expected to challenge for the one promotion place on offer this season. A short statement from the club read: “Longford Town wish to announce that by mutual consent, the club and first team manager Alan Mathews have parted ways. “We thank Alan for his efforts and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. “Gary Cronin will take charge of the first team for next week’s game versus Shelbourne.” Goals from Josh Collins and Georgie Kelly gave UCD a 2-0 win away to Athlone Town which sees them regain second place on goal difference ahead of Cobh Ramblers. In the top-of-the-table clash at St Colman’s Park, Cobh held leaders Waterford to a 0-0 draw. Blues thus remain two points clear. Shelbourne’s poor season continued as they lost 4-1 at home to improving Cabinteely, their sixth defeat in seven games.
