NEW IDEAS GET MY BACKING
THE latest proposals for the overhaul of the All-ireland Championship have won the backing of Wexford boss Davy Fitzgerald.
If adopted at Special Congress in September for 2018, it would make this year’s Leinster and Munster Championships the last as we know them as they would be played on a round-robin basis next year with the top two teams out of five contesting the final.
The CCCC format propose a third group too, containing more developmental counties who get the opportunity to enter the Liam Maccarthy Cup (left) race.
Fitzgerald said: “I’d 100% love to see it in. I don’t think it will affect the clubs as much as they are thinking.
“I think we could do this. We could tighten up on fixtures a bit more. It is coming in next year, both the All-irelands in August.
“That’s a positive. We could run those three or four round robin games off one week after another instead of giving us a two-week break or anything like that.”
