CHRISTIAN AND LIONS SAYS NIC

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

MARTIN O’NEILL has been warned that Denmark are more than a one man team. Tottenham ace Christian Eriksen is (above) talisman and will spearhead their World Cup play-off assault against the Republic of Ireland in three weeks. Eriksson scored eight goals in the qualifying campaign, six of which came in the last six games. But Niclas Vemmelund – Dundalk FC’S Danish defender – insists there is more to Age Hareide’s side than just Eriksen. Vemmelund (inset) told Mirror Sport: “We have quite a young team coming through and we’ve got better and better since we’ve changed manager. “Eriksson is peaking right now but there are a lot of young players and I think we’ll be even better in a year or two. We’re going the right way.” He continued: “It’s fair to say that Eriksen is our key player. Every country has a main man – like Gareth Bale with Wales – and it’s the same with Denmark. “But we still have a good few boys who can do something on their own to stand out. Pione Sisto has been really good on the left and can open any defence. “We have Kasper Schmeichel in goal – one of the best keepers around. We have good players playing for good clubs but Eriksen is the main man with his goals and creativity. I still think he is underrated but he likes that, he plays under the radar.” Vemmelund is confident Denmark will win through and reach their first tournament since the 2010 World Cup when they went out at the group stage. He said: “I think it would have been a better draw if it was Northern Ireland, but it’s alright. “Everybody is feeling optimistic this year and beating Poland 4-0 in qualifying was the biggest highlight in a long time. They expect to go through.”
