Huge drop in flying insects

Rush for 1,000 flights to world cup qualifier

- BY HELEN WHITEHOUSE

UP to three-quarters of flying insects have died out in less than 30 years, with scientists fearing an “ecological Armageddon”.

Insects including bees and butterflies in 63 German nature reserves have decreased by 76% since 1989. Scientists have long suspected insects are in sharp decline due to far fewer being squashed on the front of vehicles.

The cause of the drop is unknown but could be linked to use of pesticides. IRELAND fans are set for an online flight buying frenzy today as 1,000 seats to Denmark go up for sale.

Aer Lingus is putting on special one-off trips to the country for our crucial World Cup qualifier on Saturday, November 11.

The Irish operator will sell a total of 1,000 round trips to avid soccer fans wanting to get to Copenhagen for the tie – which will have a sequel in the Aviva Stadium the following Tuesday. The flights are set to cost from €348 for a round trip including fees and taxes.

Aer Lingus chief operating officer Mike Rutter said: “Irish sporting fans are renowned for their unwavering support and Aer Lingus is delighted to be able to transport the hundreds of soccer enthusiasts to Copenhagen to support Ireland as they face Denmark in their World Cup play-off.

“While we don’t normally operate flights to Denmark we have been able to put on special flights from Dublin direct to Copenhagen. As Ireland’s only four- star airline we look forward to welcoming soccer fans on board Aer Lingus and wish our Boys In Green the very best of luck.”

Yesterday the FAI remained locked in talks with the Danish Football Association over ticket allocation for both legs but no agreement was reached.

Meanwhile, some premium-level seats for the second leg in Dublin will go on public sale today at 11am on Ticketmaster.ie.

The FAI announced last night a limited number of general tickets will also be available to buy on Tuesday. A spokesman said: “Should more tickets for the second leg at Aviva Stadium become available, they will go on public sale.”
