BRYAN Dobson read his final

Six One News broadcast on

RTE yesterday with thousands of fans tuning in for his last appearance on the station.

He said “it’s been a blast” as he quit the news programme after 21 years to head for Morning Ireland next week.

Co-anchor Sharon Ni Bheolain fought back tears as she wished Dobson farewell live on air during his final bulletin.

She described the 57-year-old broadcaste­r as “a rock” as she thanked him for his support over the years.

An emotional Ni Bheolain said: “On behalf of the Six One team at the At charity event in May moment and the Six One team going back decades – I know that’s going to make you feel old Dobbo – it falls to me to say thank you. “You’ve been a rock, you’ve been our anchor figurative­ly and literally. I’m not going to look at you now because I know I’m going to get all teary.

“From my point of view you’ve been a great friend and a mentor, I’m sure the whole country joins with me this evening in wishing you the very, very best.” Signing off on the Six One for the last time, Dobson thanked his RTE colleagues and the viewers. He said: “I’m completely taken by surprise.

“Firstly I want to thank you Sharon for your very kind words. It’s been wonderful working with you and everyone who has been on the programme now and over the years.

“It’s been a blast, it really has been fantastic. I’m looking forward to pastures new so I’ll be on the radio with Morning Ireland from Wednesday next week.

“So although I hate to go, I’m afraid I have to. So thank you and goodnight.”

Dobbo will now join Rachael English, Dr Gavin Jennings and Audrey Carville on the RTE Radio One programme. It is

understood his replacemen­t for the Six One News will be announced “in the coming weeks”.

Among the names linked with the role are Ray Kennedy, David Mccullough and Keelin Shanley.

The Dublin man has spent 29 years working with RTE.

Since joining the Six One News in 1996, Dobbo has become one of the most recognisab­le faces in Irish media.
