FF CALLS FOR LUAS COPS

-

Hundreds of tiny earthquakes near the slopes of Cumbre Vieja have rocked La Palma over the past few weeks.

Experts are now keeping a 24-hour watch on the tourist hotspot, which is popular with Irish travellers.

Scientists from the University of California and University College London have said an eruption could cause a massive landslide to enter the Atlantic Ocean, sparking a 500mph tidal wave that could hit Ireland, Britain and even the US.

It could result in waves as high as 600m submerging the African coast within an hour – and the southern coastlines of Ireland and Britain in just three-and-ahalf hours.

National Geographic Institute specialists are monitoring the earthquakes and a team of geologists are taking CO2 profiles to work out how likely the volcano is to blow.

Last week they produced a map showing the tremors mainly hit close to the slopes of the active volcano Cumbre Vieja, which last erupted in 1971.

About 44 earthquakes measuring up to 2.1 magnitude were recorded on the FIANNA Fail has called for the setting up of a transport police unit to tackle public disorder on the Luas.

The party’s Dublin spokesman John Lahart said issues on the tram are causing severe disruption to commuters.

Last year more than 1,000 incidents of disorder were reported on the service. Mr Lahart added: “A zero-tolerance holiday island in just 15 hours over one weekend early this month.

But experts believe hundreds more tremors were too small to be recorded, prompting them to warn the volcano could be set to cause devastation.

The largest tremor so far has measured 2.7 on the Richter scale and was followed around 24 hours later by one of magnitude 2.6, before a third of 2.1 hit. Some 86,000 people on the island have not been able to feel the activity because it is occurring around 27km below ground.

However, David Calvo, head of outreach at Involcan – the Canary Island Volcanology Institute, said it is unlikely there is anything to be worried about. He said: “This is the first swarm of this kind in the last 40 years in La Palma, but I think we have to be cautious as the seismic stations have been improving through the years and now we can see things we couldn’t in the past.” news@irishmirror.ie

approach must be taken to target the culprits and combat incidents of antisocial behaviour.

“Fianna Fail has consistently proposed to examine the concept of establishing a Dublin transport police unit which will be responsible for enforcing the law on all public transport services in Dublin including the Luas Cross City.”
