Tax alert as self-assess figures soar
EXPERTS are warning a bigger number of selfassessed earners could end up paying tax this year.
In 2016, Revenue’s net receipts from self-assessed income rose from €1.434million in 2015 to €1.915million – and a similar increase is expected in 2017.
Tax consultant Barry Flanagan said: “New earners now include bloggers and Airbnb hosts.
“This trend has led to a greater number of selfassessed persons paying into the tax pot.
“The upturn in the economy will likely lead to increased income this year – their bill could be bigger.” ACTOR Barry Keoghan has revealed he’s a big fan of Conor Mcgregor – and vowed he will play the UFC champion in a movie one day.
The 25-year-old screen star has been tipped as one of Hollywood’s hottest new actors after his performance in upcoming movie The Killing Of A Sacred Deer.
And now Dubliner Barry has opened up about his admiration for The Notorious.
He said: “I really admire Conor for his drive and attitude.
“Coming from where he did, and it’s not too far away from me, there aren’t a lot of opportunities – but look what he achieved. I’ll play him one day in a movie.”
Even after starring in a string of blockbusters in the past year – including Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk – former Love/hate actor Barry isn’t carried away with his new celebrity lifestyle.
He added: “It’s all about noticing the line between this life and that life. “This week there might be a first-class trip to LA where they treat you very well but the following week I’ll go home and butter my own bread.
“It’s dangerous when STAR Barry in Dunkirk people get stuck in that first world and the focus on their work gets weak.
“My girlfriend [Shona] helps me keep my feet on the ground.
“She’d be like, ‘Calm the passion a little, you’re not in LA now.’ Know what I mean?
“My granny would be the same. It’s important to surround yourself with good people.”
As well as making waves in the movie industry, Summerhill native Barry is also one of the faces for French fashion house Dior – something he admitted his friends were surprised about.
He told this week’s RTE Guide: “Initially, they were like, what the f*** are you like? But they understand.
“This has not been an overnight success for me. This has been a long run, since I was about 17, and it’s now starting to happen.”
The Mammal star is also a keen boxer and was set to make his televised fighting debut on TG4 in September.
But Barry was forced to bow out of the fight at the last minute after being left with a bad injury.
He added: “My knuckle is messed up. It went out of place. I’ll have to get surgery now.
“I was competing for the Celtic Cup but had to pull out three days before it started.
“Boxing is something I always loved doing growing up. I always trained with gloves, on the bags and sparring.”
