Must be Inne with a shout

- BY GARY RALSTON

DEREK MCINNES might not have been a big-name player when he arrived at Rangers – but he ended up a big-game player.

Former Gers team-mate Barry Nicholson watched his midfield pal bust a gut to crack it at Ibrox and he reckons the same attitude and desire as a boss makes him the perfect fit for the Ibrox hot seat.

The Aberdeen manager is high on the Light Blues’s wish list to replace Pedro Caixinha after working wonders at Pittodrie, establishing the Dons as the second force in Scotland.

Ex-pittodrie favourite Nicholson reckons Mcinnes is exactly the same as a gaffer as he was as a player – which is why he is the ideal man to mop up the mess left by his sacked Portuguese predecessor.

Nicholson said: “Whoever goes in at Ibrox has a tough job on his hands.

“Derek simply has to be near the top of the list. There will be hundreds of names getting thrown at the board right now but he must be worth a shout.”

Rangers have it all to gain if Mcinnes makes the move – but his other former club would be left in the lurch.

Nicholson, who had three successful years in the north-east before moving to Preston, said: “It would be a huge blow for Aberdeen to lose him.

“I was at the League Cup Final when he won the club’s first honour for years. I was delighted for him, it was a big deal after so long without silverware.

“It will be tough for the Dons if he was to leave but no one at Pittodrie could say he wasn’t leaving a strong side in a healthy state.”
