BROTHER AND SISTER KILLED IN SMASH HORROR

Siblings die in head-on collision

N25 near Wexford town was closed after crash A BROTHER and sister were killed in a horrific two-car road crash yesterday.

The victims have been named locally as Sylvester Dempsey, who was in his 50s, and his sibling Ann Dempsey, who was thought to be aged in her 40s.

They were travelling in their Renault Clio from Wexford town when tragedy struck on a straight stretch of road between Barntown School and Larkins Cross.

It’s believed the Dempseys’ car collided head-on with a 4x4 heading from the New Ross direction. After the alarm was raised, emergency services, including two sections of Wexford Fire Service, were deployed at 1.30pm.

The Dempseys were declared dead at the scene while the two men in the 4x4 were not seriously injured but were said to be suffering from severe shock.

Following the collision the N25 remained closed throughout the afternoon between Barntown and Larkins Cross as a forensic examinatio­n was carried out. Diversions were put in place on what road.

The tragic siblings were wellknown and respected members of the community in Clongeen, Wellington­bridge, Co Wexford, which has been left in shock by the news.

In a statement a Garda spokesman said: “A male and a female were fatally injured when the car they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a 4 x 4 vehicle. They were pronounced dead is a busy stretch of at the scene and their bodies were removed to Waterford Hospital for postmortem.

“The driver and passenger of the 4 x4 were also taken to Wexford Hospital with injuries which were described as minor.

“Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses or to anyone who may have dash cam footage to contact officers at Wexford on 053 9165200, the Confidenti­al Line 1800 666 111 or any station.”

These latest fatalities bring to 129 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year.
