UNITEDKEEN TO DISCUSS NEW DEAL WITH JOSE

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL

MANCHESTER UNITED want Jose Mourinho to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

They plan to open contract talks with him in the New Year, with a lucrative extension on the table to reflect the progress he has brought.

United are confident he will not be tempted by the lure of managing Paris Saint-germain next summer, despite recently expressing his admiration for the mega-rich club.

Mourinho signed a threeyear contract when he succeeded Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2016, leading United to League Cup and Europa League success – and straight back into the Champions League – in his first season.

In an exclusive interview with Mirror Sport, the Portuguese boss pointed out he is only halfway through his plans to take United back to the top and acknowledged the aim is to deliver a first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson (above) stepped down in 2013.

“I signed a three-year contract and when I signed that it was basically to try and improve the direction of the team,” said Mourinho.

“And when we want to improve the direction of the team, it means to try and win titles, which we did already last season. But when we speak about titles, everyone obviously thinks about the Premier League.”

There have been murmurings of discontent at United over the perceived negative style Mourinho’s side have adopted at times.

But United’s hierarchy do not share such concerns, believing Mourinho has improved the quality and the style of play over the past two seasons.
