Mceleney eyes return to Stripes

PATRICK MCELENEY is holding talks with Blackburn Rovers today but could still move to former club Derry City or Shamrock Rovers.

The in-demand Dundalk playmaker is out of contract at Oriel Park and it’s believed he has been offered a three-year deal to remain with Stephen Kenny’s squad.

However, Derry man Mceleney, 25, is seriously considering a move back to the Brandywell – despite reports he has been offered a four-year deal being wide of the mark.

Having lost two regulars in Barry Mcnamee and Aaron Barry to champions Cork City, Kenny Shiels would love Mceleney to return the Foylesiders.

Shamrock Rovers are also very keen to sign the talented midfielder, a league winner with Dundalk in his first year with the club in 2016.

Doncaster Rovers and Oldham Athletic have also been linked with a move for Mceleney but Blackburn represents the most realistic cross-channel option for him.

Meanwhile, Shane Grimes has announced his departure from Dundalk after three years with the club.

Posting on social media, Grimes said: “Today has been a hard day, the past three years have been a privilege and I feel very lucky to have been involved with my hometown club in such successful years.”

MCDAID has swapped Premier Division newcomers Waterford United for Northern Ireland championship side Larne.

Former Derry City striker Mcdaid scored 11 goals for the Blues last season as they marched to the First Division title.

However with Ismahil Akinade joining from Bohemians, and last season’s top scorer Mark O’sullivan still central to the set up, Mcdaid was eager to secure first team football.

Town have signed midfielder Jamie Holywood from Drogheda United and also re-signed Cian Byrne.
