Ronan’s Irish TV skit sparks anger
Cecily Strong and Saoirse Ronan on Saturday Night Live HOLLYWOOD star Saoirse Ronan has sparked anger after taking part in a TV sketch that appeared to make fun of Irish people.
The actor, who hosted Saturday Night Live at the weekend, impersonated an Aer Lingus flight attendant which was criticised for “cringeworthy” stereotypes.
The 23-year-old told passengers their flight will be delayed due to a dog being on the runway in a gag that included potato jokes and questionable Irish accents.
People took to social media to vent their anger with one user saying: “this is nowhere close to being funny” while another said it was
“woeful, humourless and awful.” The user wrote: “She played along with all the dodgy Irish stereotypes.”
But bosses at the airline took the sketch in good humour and sent up Donald Trump’s response to another SNL skit in its reply.
A spokesman tweeted: “Just tried watching Saturday Night Live – unwatchable! Totally biased, not funny and the Ronan impersonation just can’t get any worse. Sad.” Ronan, who starred in the film Brooklyn, described the show as SNL’S “St Patrick’s Day episode” as she was supported by U2.
She said: “I have an extremely Irish name, some say too Irish,” “You can see why people have a hard time. If it was a Wheel of Fortune puzzle, you couldn’t afford it.”
