Cold blast to bring snow and ice
IRELAND could be dreaming of a white Christmas as temperatures plunge and the chance of snow increases.
An Arctic blast is heading our way later this week, with temperatures dipping as low as -3C.
A Met Eireann forecaster said: “Thursday will be bitterly cold with fresh, gusty north to north-west breezes and afternoon temperatures of just 3C to 6C.”
The chilly blast will bring with it wintry conditions.
The forecaster added: “There’ll be sunny spells and showers of rain, sleet and snow.
“The likelihood of snow will increase in the evening and night as temperatures fall to between -2C and 1C.”
And the cold snap is here to stay for a couple of days.
The forecaster said: “Friday will continue very cold with sunny spells and showers of rain, sleet and snow.
“On Friday night a sharp or severe frost will develop with icy patches as temperatures fall to between -3C and 0C. Saturday will be cold and mainly dry with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 3C to 6C. “At the moment, it looks like rain will spread from the west on Saturday night and will turn to snow for a time as it meets the cold air .”
In the meantime, the milder conditions of 11C today and 13C tomorrow look like the calm before this chill sets in. A combination of mist, drizzle and some unseasonable highs are expected today and tomorrow.
Met Eireann predicted: “Tuesday will continue mostly cloudy and mainly dry.
“There’ll be a little drizzle or mist, most likely in the west and north. Highest temperatures of 9C to 11C.
“On Wednesday morning, rain will spread eastwards across the country.
“It will continue for the rest of the day and on Wednesday night and will be heavy at times, especially on Wednesday night.
“Highest temperatures will be around 12 C or 13 C .”
