World unites in fury over threat that is unleashed

Brendan Howlin LEADERS across the world have condemned the US decision.

Labour Party Leader Brendan Howlin TD said: “The decision of Donald Trump to move the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem is a provocativ­e act that damages rather than strengthen­s the long term peace of the State of Israel and all the people of the region – Arab and Jewish.

“Those of us who support the rights of the Jewish people to their homeland, and the equal right of the Palestinia­n people to their own state, will view this act by Trump as a further step on the road away from a two state solution.”

Pope Francis said: “I appeal strongly for all to Pope yesterday respect the status quo.”

Theresa May warned: “We believe it is unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace.”

Egypt’s president Abdul Fattah al-sisi warned against “measures that would undermine chances for peace in the Middle East”.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan deemed it to be a “red line for Muslims”.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman told Mr Trump: “Any declaratio­n on Jerusalem before reaching a final settlement would escalate tension.”

Palestinia­n group Hamas said it “confirms the US has not and will not be an honest broker... concerning our people”.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri said the Arab world had “rejected” the move, and France called for calm.
