Car crash victim Doug’s Irish wife ‘numb with grief’

Her sister tells of family’s heartache

- BY TREVOR QUINN

THE Irish wife of tragic crash victim Doug Alexander Jnr is numb with grief having lost her “best buddy”, her sister said last night.

Maureen Mulrooney said her sibling Marian and the family are heartbroken after the horrific car crash that claimed the life of the dad-oftwo, his brother and two parents.

Musician Doug Jnr, 52, his 49 year-old brother Stephen, a police officer, died hours after they landed in Ireland from the US for their aunt Winnie Keevey’s wake.

The siblings and their parents Doug Snr and Lily, both 75, were making a U-turn near Cushinstown Church near New Ross, Co Wexford, at 6.30pm on Monday when an articulated truck was in collision with the car side-on killing all four instantly.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Maureen, from Cree, Co Clare, said: “When I ring Marian I get lost for words and I don’t know what to say to comfort her.

“She’s devastated. She told me on Tuesday, ‘I loved him so much’. He was her life. She can’t talk properly and she is numb with grief. I just wish this didn’t happen and we could go back to Monday and change it.

“Doug Jnr was so good to my sister. She said to me on Tuesday, ‘My buddy, my best buddy has gone’ and she was crying. It’s terrible. I don’t think Marian will ever be the same.”

Maureen, 33, said Marian emigrated to Illinois in the US from Co Clare 13 years ago and married Doug Jnr in 2008 and the happy couple had daughters Abby, seven, and six-year-old Katie.

Maureen, a carer for her mum Bridget, added: “Everytime I’d ring my sister on a Sunday you’d hear Doug Jnr and his dad having a chat in the background and they were all very close.” Steven, Doug Jnr, Lily and Doug Alexander Snr
