Jurgen too cavalier to be a king

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

Firmino. Incredibly, no visiting defender got within five yards of any of Liverpool’s front four in that move. Then Firmino finished after Mane ran through totally unchallenged to cross for the Brazilian, with a helping hand – literally – from a Spartak defender.

If there were fears of another Liverpool lapse, another Sevilla-style meltdown, Mane put them to rest with another contender for the goal of the season, which he seems to produce every season. Sub James Milner crossed brilliantly just two minutes into the second half, and the Senegal star launched himself into a horizontal position five feet off the ground to smash a volley into the roof of the net.

From there, the only remaining interest on a night where Liverpool announced themselves to the rest of Europe, was whether Coutinho could complete a hat-trick.

He did not keep the fans waiting for long. Milner was again the provider, Coutinho’s shot taking a deflection on its way in.

Daniel Sturridge, on as a sub, escaped down the right and unselfishly crossed to give Mane a tap in.

And Salah crowned an epic victory with the seventh. DANNY MURPHY doubts Liverpool can win the Premier League playing Jurgen Klopp’s “cavalier” football.

Murphy says no side has won the title playing attacking football while being so fragile at the back.

The former Red cited Kevin Keegan’s implosion with Newcastle in the 1995-96 season and says Klopp needs to strike the right balance between attack and defence.

“When I see Liverpool play well and I see them doing what Klopp wants, they look incredible,” said Murphy.

“But I can’t think of a team that plays that way and has won the league. Keegan’s Newcastle was probably the closest. They need to find a balance.”

Murphy claims Klopp and Liverpool missed the opportunity to solve their defensive problems in the summer when they failed to sign a centre-half.

“The summer was a big one for him and I’m not sure there was enough done in the market,” the former England midfielder told askthefans.co.uk.

“They tried to get Van Dijk and that was nearly over the line. There is an argument, though, that they should still be better defensively regardless of the players they have.”
