Leo has to ensure deal is binding

-

DEAL or no Brexit deal was the question being asked but not properly answered last night.

What the Taoiseach said was a “bulletproof ” deal on Friday has now been shot full of holes.

At first it was thought the UK’S blundering Brexit Minister David Davis was pandering to the Little Britainers when he claimed the agreement was not legally binding.

Unfortunately for Leo Varadkar and the Government, the European Commission confirmed there was no legally binding deal.

What had taken place was a “gentleman’s agreement” between the EU’S chief negotiator Michel Barnier and David Davis.

The fact Mr Davis went on TV two days later to inform the British public the deal was not binding leaves no one in any doubt about how he interprets the accord.

Brexiteer Michael Gove said within 24 hours of the agreement the UK could change it.

Prime Minister Theresa May added to the confusion when she told the House of Commons that Britain’s offer for its EU divorce bill will be off the table if Downing Street does not agree a future partnership with Brussels.

While Mrs May has again stressed there will be no hard border, she has not explained how this can be avoided if the trade talks collapse.

The Taoiseach must ensure this agreement is binding and can be legally enforced should the British go back on their word.
