SAOIRSE Ronan has told how she forgot about the Golden Globes and was hiking when she heard she was nominated for a third time.

The Carlow actress has led the charge of homegrown artists named in five categories at the 2018 awards, which take place next month.

The 23-year-old received a nod for her starring role in coming-of-age drama Lady Bird – in the Musical or Comedy category.

Saoirse told how she was out hiking in Co Wicklow on Sunday when she got the call.

She told US People magazine: “I actually forgot about it because I was on a different time zone and up and out of the house.

“I had a friend over and we went to this beautiful site called Glendalough, which is a monastic site and there’s a beautiful lake and mountains.

“My bag just started to vibrate nonstop and I was like ‘What’s going on?’

“And then I saw a bunch of missed calls from my publicist and I was like, ‘Oh s—, they’re out today!”

The actress got rave reviews for her performance in Lady Bird – a comedy about a high school student, played by Saoirse, and her difficult relationship with her pals and mother Marion, played by Laurie Metcalf.

Irish animated film The Breadwinner, Daniel Daylewis, Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe and writer-director Martin Mcdonagh are also up for gongs.

And Saoirse said she preferred finding out about the nomination the way she did.

She added: “It was quite nice as it meant I wasn’t thinking about it too much.

“It was such a lovely surprise when I heard. It’s very exciting.”

The actress was nominated for the first time in 2008 for her role in Atonement and then again in 2016 for Brooklyn.

She told how she is hoping to Saoirse in film Lady Bird

take her mum as her guest to the 75th Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA on Sunday, January 7.

Saoirse said: “I called my mom and she didn’t answer.

“She called me back and was like, ‘The one time I didn’t answer the phone.”

The actress is also shortlisted for the Critics’ Choice and Independent Spirit Awards.

It is expected the role may earn her a third Oscar nod.
